In Nazi-occupied Paris, most Frenchmen tread warily, but gay nightclub singer Yves Lacroix puts himself in the spotlight with every performance. As a veteran of France’s doomed defense, a survivor of a prison camp, and a “degenerate,” he knows he’s a target. His comic stage persona disguises a shamed, angry heart and gut-wrenching fear for a sister embedded in the Resistance.
Yet Yves ascends the hierarchy of Parisian nightlife to become a star, attracting the attention—and the protection—of the Nazi Oberst Heinrich von Starck. To complicate matters further, young foot soldier Falk Harfner’s naïve adoration of Yves threatens everything he’s worked for. So does Aryan ideologue von Grimmstein, rival to von Starck, who sees something “a bit like a Jew” in Yves.
When an ill-chosen quip can mean torture at the hands of the Gestapo, being the acclaimed Nightingale of Paris might cost Yves his music and his life.

Historicals have always been my favorite Voionovs. He has a magical way of transporting me into them that just blows me away. This book was filled with that. Whatever that is. With this one, he took me back to WWII, Nazi-occupied Paris. Oh my goodness the people I met! Yves, the French, gay nightclub singer, Maurice, the nightclub owner...he was fun, and omg Nazis running around everywhere. von Starck, who I couldn't help but like, von Grimmstein...whoa, that guy was scary right there, and then there was Falk, the young Nazi soldier...Falk...*melts*...I loved him. Melted my heart, that one did. What a cast of characters. As I'm reading, I'm following these characters around Paris, during a war, I'm in a club, listening to a singer, Nazis eek!, the resistance, the theater, SS, French lessons, bombs are going off, Gestapo running around...OMG with the tension. Always with the tension! There was a thread of it running constantly in the background, no matter what was going on. There were times I'd get so swept away in it all, I'd suddenly realize I was white-knuckling my poor kindle, or I'd want to scream "NO! What are you doing! Where are you going! you're going to get caught!"...
I'm rambling. I can't help it. I love my Voinov books, and this one is a real jewel. Color me excited. :D

Nightingale edition by Aleksandr Voinov Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Beautifully written and narrated both. What a treat. After reading the other reviews, I was braced for something so true and harsh that I would not be able to truly enjoy it. But I know what a terrific writer Voinov is, so I took it on faith. I loved the book and the ending, too. Thank you so much Aleksandr.
5+ stars. I purchased the book a while back but it sat on my TBR list. When I saw it was available at Audible and the narrator was Matthew Lloyd Davis (who could be reading his grocery list and make it compelling) I jumped on it. Voinov has been a favorite of mine for a long time. I especially enjoy his historical novels and this one didn't disappoint. Although the author has said repeatedly that this isn't a romance, it is a love story. Of a city, country, way of life, and complex men who populated Paris during World War II. I loved every thing about it. Thank you for this great read! Highly recommend.
FABULOUS! My mind is spinning attempting to convey how incredible this story is. Unfortunately I am not the wordsmith like many and cannot create the wonderful reviews like other members. This book was BRILLIANT.
This is such a unique perspective, the story is set in German occupied Paris. It was so well researched, thought out, Voinov creates this setting so perfectly, every location I could visualize each place. I felt Paris and the political tension, the political animosity. Then the people he gave us in this book, I was so drawn into their lives, the characters were different, yet so complex and you wanted to understand everything about each one of them. Their story of survival and how they each internalize it through this frightening period of time.
Voinov writing is unforgettable. Read this book. I LOVED this story and highly recommend it.
It's clear an enormous amount of research has gone into this novel - even though I'm not qualified to judge the events and circumstances for accuracy, the story felt very realistic. The MC, while cowardly at times, was overall still very sympathetic - the motivation for his actions was believable and I'm sure there were many people in Paris (as well as in my country that was occupied both by the Germans and the Russians in the course of World War II) who adapted to the circumstances and simply wanted to get on with their lives. Still, it pleased me to see he did have some fight in him, during that risqué number at the Palace and towards the end.
The slow build-up of love between Yves and Falk was also very well written - while Falk had a crush on him more or less from the start, Yves warmed up to him slowly, thanks to his insistence in wooing him - that's another thing that felt very lifelike. I wish there could have been more scenes involving the slow moments between those two, maybe some language lessons... Or would that have been too much like Cabaret then? ;) Or was it simply because the author wanted to avoid the book becoming too much like a romance and preferred to concentrate on the historical events?
Anyway, since I also like historicals, this book was a resounding success for me. Voinov is one of my auto-buy authors and I don't see that changing any time soon.
